GEAR UP Achievement Grant:

This $1000 grant is awarded to students in the Montana GEAR UP cohort who are enrolled in college preparatory courses and meet the eligibility requirements. It is both an incentive to complete their education and a reward for their continued efforts to fulfill the mission of GEAR UP.

The Montana Guaranteed Student Loan Program administers the Achievement Grant program for Montana GEAR UP. In 2005, the Montana Guaranteed Student Loan Program (MGSLP) received 317 applications, representing 18 out of 21 of the 1999 GEAR UP grant schools. Out of the 317 that applied, 262 grants were awarded in January. Awards will be held in an account for up to 18 months after the recipients graduate from high school and are ready to put their funds to use for further education.

Essay Contest:

The Montana Guaranteed Student Loan Program has sponsored an essay contest for students in the GEAR UP demonstration schools since the 1999-2000 school year. All schools are encouraged to participate in the essay contest. First place essay winners in 7th and 8th grade will be awarded a $200 college scholarship. The scholarships will be held until the student enrolls in college. English teachers are encouraged to assist their GEAR UP students by including the essay contest in the curriculum of their English class.

Essay winners will be selected from each school and announced in April. Winning essays will be published in a booklet that will be provided to the students and the participating schools during the following academic year.

GEAR UP Pathways Scholarship:

The GEAR UP Pathways Scholarship helps provide academically prepared students from low and low- middle-income families access to postsecondary education. The scholarship is awarded to recipients of the Montana GEAR UP Achievement Grant who meet the eligibility requirements and apply during their senior year of high school. Scholarships are awarded based upon a variety of factors including financial need, academic preparation and performance, participation in extra-curricular activities, community service or volunteer projects, the quality of response on the written application, and the quality of the project submitted or described.

The scholarship may be awarded for up to a five-year period as long as the recipient continues to make satisfactory academic progress, maintains a 2.0 GPA and remains eligible for a Pell Grant. Though the recipient may receive up to $5,000 per year, with a maximum total amount of up to $20,000 over the life of the scholarship, the actual scholarship amount depends on the cost of the program in which you enroll and other financial aid you may receive. The scholarship may be used at any public or private accredited institution in Montana.
